  • The mountain hut in the picture is the Puez Hut. It stands along the famous Alta Via No. 2, an amazing 180-km-long hiking trail that connects the town of Bressanone/Brixen in South Tyrol with Feltre in the Belluno area.

    This high mountain trail passes through the Puez-Geisler Nature Park, known for its spectacular rocky peaks and landscapes. The mountain in the picture, the Peitlerkofel, is 2,875 metres high and is part of the same nature park.

    The spotted nutcracker bird and the Swiss stone pine tree are good friends in nature. The bird collects pine seeds and hides them underground to save for winter. But sometimes it forgets where they are hidden – and from those forgotten seeds, brand-new pine trees begin to grow. That’s how this little bird helps the forest spread and grow bigger.

  • You can find Max and Sofia a total of 14 times.

  • Max is the first to reach the mountain top.

  • The Ladin flag has three horizontal stripes:

    • Blue at the top, like the clear sky above the mountains

    Hidden phrase: THE DOLOMITES

    Did you know? The Dolomites got their name from Déodat de Dolomieu, who was born on 23 June 1750 in Dolomieu, France. He was a famous explorer who loved studying rocks and mountains. During his travels, he discovered a special pale-coloured rock rich in magnesium. This rock was later named dolomite in his honour – and eventually, the Dolomites got their name from him too.

  • Oops! Even on great adventures, little mistakes can sometimes sneak in. If you spotted one – congratulations! You have the sharp eyes of a true Dolomites explorer.

    ERROR: The compass is positioned correctly, but it is not working properly: the needle is not pointing north! A working compass always points north, no matter where you are. By carefully observing the direction of the needle and comparing it with the position of Bressanone/Brixen, which lies to the north, it becomes clear that something is wrong.

The idea behind the project

The Dolomiti Challenge turns the experience of discovering the Dolomites into a shared adventure, brimming with play, nature and curiosity.

The idea is simple: a paper map you don’t just follow, but actually play with. An interactive journey of quizzes, crosswords, search-and-find activities and bite-sized challenges that guides children and families through the region, step by step.

Alongside Sofia and Max, every stop along the way becomes a mission: observe, explore, hunt for clues and uncover the answers, all while enjoying the great outdoors.

A project by Angelika Frenademetz

The Dolomiti Challenge is the brainchild of Angelika Frenademetz. Born and raised in Alta Badia and a native Ladin speaker, Angelika works as a designer and hiking guide. Through the Dolomiti Challenge, she transforms the Dolomites into a creative workshop where every outing becomes a little journey of discovery and wonder. The project welcomes little and grown-up explorers alike – it’s an adventure for the whole family!
